Who we are
Generations Family Health Center, Inc. (Generations) is a private, not-for-profit, regional Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) serving eastern Connecticut since 1984. Its first site opened in Willimantic under the auspices of the Windham Area Community Action Program (now ACCESS Agency, Inc). In 1991, the health center separately incorporated as HealthFirst, Inc. later changing its name to Generations Family Health Center, Inc.
Generations opened additional primary care sites in the Danielson borough of the town of Killingly (1993), the city of Norwich (1994), the town of Putnam (2009), and the Putnam School Based Health Center (2014). From 2002 to 2020, Generations provided oral health care in the community through our Across the Smiles Mobile Dental program. This service is currently suspended due to COVID-19 regulatory restrictions.
Today, Generations provides a full continuum of primary health care, oral health care, behavioral health care, support services and care coordination services to a primarily medically underserved population including children, at-risk families, HIV, homeless, and migrant populations through sites in Willimantic, Norwich, Danielson, Putnam and the Putnam School Based Health Center. In addition, Generations operates numerous community programs that are focused on special populations including: Agricultural Farmworkers; Children in Fostercare; Children with Special Health Care Needs; Health Care to the Homeless; Ryan White Title C and D Early Intervention programs.
With a budget of more than $26 million and 226 employees, Generations provides services in a large, primarily rural area. In 2020, Generations provided 87,341 visits to more than 18,000 patients through our medical, dental and behavioral health departments. The Generations mission is to provide quality, compassionate and professional health care that is affordable, easily accessible and without discrimination to all members of the communities served.
As a community-based not-for-profit health service organization with 501 (c)(3) status, Generations Family Health Center, Inc. is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of 51 percent% consumers of health center services. The Generations Family Health Center, Inc. service delivery area encompasses more than 900 square miles in rural eastern Connecticut and serves residents of at least 39 towns.
Generations is the only FQHC in Windham County and one of two federally-funded FQHCs in Norwich. Generations is the only health care organization serving all of these population groups in the entire service area.
